Stoptober: Show Me The Willpower

October is one of those transitional months isn't it? September is the start of autumn, school and college, the end of summer. October has got Halloween at the end of it and not much else. The NHS are trying to change that by introducing Stoptober, a 28 day challenge to stop smoking. Inspiration struck, so am stopping a few things of my own.

I don't smoke. I've never smoked. I'm overweight. My BMI is a higher on the index than it should be and this puts me at risks to my health, just like a smoker. So I'm jumping on the bandwagon and setting up a little challenge of my own: can I change my eating habits by pure willpower?

I quit Slimming World a few months ago. The group discussion was making me feel like a failure on a weekly basis. Everyone was on their own personal journeys losing lots of weight but instead of being inspired, I just kept wondering why it wasn't happening to me. Life was getting in the way and I couldn't resist overindulging. That's not to say the programme doesn't help a lot of people, I cook regularly from the recipe books and have kept off some of the weight I lost. Every week, you confess your eating 'sins' to the group and the leader would say, supportively, 'did you enjoy it'? 'Yes', I would reply but secretly thinking, 'not if I couldn't break the cycle of feeling guilty the next day'.

People who are taking part in Stoptober, may take up the challenge with some support and help, NRT, Allen Carr's book or electronic cigarettes but will power and a positive frame of mind are still important. I have all the tools. I know full well what it takes to eat healthily and control my calorie and fat intake after all the 'diets' I've studied over the years.

What lead me to this points is the EFT therapy I've been having for the last month or so. The sessions have revealed reasons behind my self-doubt and equipped me with some techniques to believe in myself and staying positive. But the choices I make from today are still all down to me.

  1. That's a great shout for Stoptober, stop whatever your vice is, I'm joining you & training to reign in my eating & failed dieting x

    1. How did it go? I started off really well but lapsed a little. To be fair, it's been a better month than usual on the food/ drink front!
